Quick verdict

Stripe is the reliable default for service businesses that primarily take payment online — consultants sending project invoices, agencies billing monthly retainers, coaches collecting session payments. It requires no monthly fee and works in most countries. It is not an all-in-one business tool and does not include booking, CRM, or field management. For businesses needing in-person payment, Square’s card reader ecosystem is stronger.

Stripe wins for: Agencies, consultants, coaches, freelancers, and photographers who need professional online invoicing or payment links without a monthly subscription.

Stripe is not for: Businesses that primarily take in-person payment, businesses that want booking included, or businesses that want a single all-in-one platform.

What Stripe does

Stripe’s core is payment infrastructure. For small service businesses, the practical tools are:

Payment Links:

  • Create a payment link in Stripe’s dashboard without any code
  • Share the link by email, text, or on your website
  • Customer pays by card — Stripe handles everything

Stripe Invoicing:

  • Create and send professional invoices from the Stripe dashboard
  • Invoices include a payment button; client pays online
  • Set up recurring invoices for retainer clients
  • Automatic payment reminders for overdue invoices

Subscriptions:

  • Manage recurring billing — useful for retainer clients or monthly service contracts
  • Customer portal for clients to update payment details

Checkout (for websites):

  • Embedded payment form on your own website
  • Stripe handles PCI compliance, card storage, and fraud detection

No monthly fee — what that means in practice

Stripe charges a percentage of each transaction (check stripe.com/pricing for current rates — they vary by country). There is no monthly subscription.

For a business sending 5–10 invoices per month, this is almost always cheaper than a platform with a monthly payment add-on. For high-volume businesses, the math changes — compare transaction fees against flat alternatives at your volume.

What Stripe does not include

Stripe is a payments company. It does not:

  • Take bookings or manage scheduling
  • Track leads or manage a client pipeline
  • Dispatch field technicians
  • Send automated review requests
  • Market to your customer list

This is fine if you already have tools for these things — or if you don’t need them yet. Stripe pairs cleanly with:

  • Calendly (booking) → Stripe (payment)
  • HubSpot free (CRM) → Stripe (invoicing)
  • Any website → Stripe Payment Links (no code required)

  • Jobber / Housecall Pro — Better if you need payment integrated into full field service management. See Jobber review.

Bottom line

Stripe is the standard choice for professional online payment for a reason: it is reliable, flexible, and costs nothing until you take a payment. For consultants, agencies, coaches, and any service business primarily invoicing clients online, it is the starting point to evaluate. Start with Stripe Invoicing or Payment Links — no technical knowledge needed.
